A Model for Living and Learning

The Campaign for the University of Minnesota, Morris

What makes UMM a model for living and learning?

Our vision of UMM as a model for living and learning drives us to leverage where we are and who we are to find local solutions to global challenges.

Making our home in the heart of the prairie, we are driven by our public liberal arts mission. Here discourse, discovery, intellectual growth, and civic responsibility are institutional hallmarks.

Surrounded by rich natural and social resources, we draw on Minnesota values like resourcefulness and determination to solve pressing environmental and economic problems in the region and beyond—all while delivering outstanding learning experiences.

UMM offers diverse and talented students opportunities to work directly with faculty, staff, and community members to apply what they learn in the classroom toward making greater Minnesota a more vibrant, resilient place.

Simply put, where we are makes us who we are: A model for living and learning.

Investing in the future

We at the University of Minnesota, Morris intend to distinguish UMM as a model for living and learning. To realize that vision, we propose a $21 million campaign to:

Your investment in Morris will:

  • Provide scholarships for 400 more students along with enhanced internship, study abroad, leadership, and employment opportunities
  • Create five new endowed professorships to inspire established faculty leaders and to cultivate the next generation of engaged teacher-scholars
  • Transform our nearly 130-year-old campus into a space that enhances student learning, faculty research, and regional outreach
  • Leverage our EcoStation living laboratory to solve grand challenges in west central Minnesota

A new chapter begins: a message from Chancellor Behr

Michelle Behr

It is a great privilege to have been selected as UMM's next chancellor. UMM is a very special institution and serves as a model of broader values that mirror my own: commitment to access, appreciation for diversity in all its forms, and belief in the power of education for societal good. I am committed to UMM's public liberal arts mission, and as I immerse myself in the campus and its culture, my passion for the university only deepens.

It is a particular joy to join the campus community at this moment in time. As we embark on a capital campaign, I will work hard to collaborate with the university community and its friends to exercise visionary leadership to ensure UMM's long-term sustainability.

With the current fiscal environment constraining institutional resources throughout the state and across the country, philanthropic investment is vital to our collective vision of UMM as a world-class model of living and learning. I have seen the power of community engagement to positively impact higher education—UMM itself is the result of community collaborations. Just as the establishment of UMM was a communal effort, so too, will this campaign present a chance for us all to come together to enable UMM to soar.

At this crucial time for American higher education, we have the opportunity, the responsibility, and the privilege to come together to create a model living and learning environment. Will you join us?—Michelle Behr, chancellor
